Presenting Findings and Results
Chapter purpose. By the end of this chapter, you should be able to apply the central concepts to a real assignment, research paper, thesis, or article in your own discipline.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
- Organize results around research questions.
- Integrate prose, tables, figures, and evidence.
- Separate presentation from interpretation when the genre requires it.
KEY TERMS
Answer the questions
The findings or results section should make the answer to each research question easy to locate. Organize by question, hypothesis, analytical category, theme, or a justified sequence. Do not reproduce the chronology of analysis unless that chronology itself matters.
Quantitative results
Name the analysis, identify the variables and sample, report the relevant values consistently, and describe the direction and magnitude of the pattern. Avoid interpreting statistical significance as practical importance or causation. Tables should reduce repetition; the prose should direct readers to the important pattern rather than restating every cell.
Qualitative findings
Present themes or analytical claims and support them with carefully selected evidence. Participant excerpts should illustrate the analysis, not replace it. Provide enough context to interpret an excerpt while protecting identity. Explain variation and negative cases when they affect the claim.
Visual evidence
Every table and figure needs a number, an informative title, clear labels, and a reference in the prose. Define abbreviations and provide a source note when required. A visual should answer a reader question more efficiently than prose; decorative or redundant visuals should be removed.
Results that readers can audit
The results section should answer the research questions in a planned order and separate observation from interpretation to the degree expected in the field. Report negative, null, contradictory, and incomplete findings when they affect the inference. Selective reporting weakens the trustworthiness of the entire study. Tables and figures should be understandable without duplicating the prose. Use titles that identify the content, define abbreviations, report units, and explain denominators or missing values. Do not use a graph to exaggerate a small difference through a misleading scale. For qualitative findings, provide sufficient contextualized evidence to demonstrate how the interpretation was grounded while protecting participants' identities. Before finalizing, reconcile every number, label, category, sample size, and research question across the abstract, methods, results, tables, figures, and appendices. Automated calculations and visualization tools can reduce manual errors, but the author must verify the input data, the transformations, and the outputs.

APPLICATIONS
- Undergraduate application Convert a small dataset or set of observations into one clear table and a 100-word results paragraph. Graduate application: Audit one findings section for question alignment, evidentiary sufficiency, and unsupported interpretation.
