Disseminating Research Beyond a Thesis

Dissemination as adaptation
A thesis is not automatically a journal article, conference presentation, policy brief, or public explanation. Each genre has a different audience, length, selection process, and purpose. Rewriting requires selecting a central contribution and restructuring the material to meet the needs of the new audience.
Choosing a channel
Consider disciplinary fit, audience, review process, access, timing, cost, and credibility. Examine a journal's aims, recent articles, and author guidance before submission. For conferences, determine whether the format is a paper, poster, panel, workshop, or short presentation. Avoid venues that promise publication without credible review or transparent practices.
Professional communication
Submission letters and inquiries should be concise and specific. Follow stated procedures, disclose related submissions, and respond to review comments respectfully. Rejection is common and should lead to a reasoned decision: revise for the same venue if invited, adapt for another venue, or reconsider the paper's central contribution.
Broader audiences
Research may also reach practitioners, communities, policymakers, or the public. Translate technical language without changing the claim. Explain uncertainty and limitations. When participants or communities contribute knowledge, consider how findings can be returned in an accessible and respectful way.
Publication, peer review, and responsible dissemination
Transforming a thesis into an article requires a new argument for a defined journal audience. Select one contribution, reduce background that does not serve it, reanalyze when necessary, and follow the target journal's current instructions. Confirm scope, article type, word limit, data policy, ethics statements, authorship expectations, and permitted use of AI tools before submission. Treat peer review as structured argument testing. Create a response table with the reviewer comment, the action taken, the manuscript location, and the reason when a suggestion is not adopted. Respond respectfully and precisely; agreement is not required, but evidence and transparency are. Never submit the same manuscript to multiple journals simultaneously unless the journals explicitly permit it. Assess journals critically. Verify the editorial board, peer-review process, indexing claims, fees, preservation, retraction policy, and publisher identity. A persuasive invitation is not evidence of quality. When presenting at a Korean or international conference, adapt your terminology, background, and speech rate to the audience, and prepare concise answers to methods, limitations, and contributions.
